Overview

Scriptural ("we", "our") is a Bible study app available on the web, as a desktop app (Windows/macOS), and as native apps for iOS and Android. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. We collect only what the app's features actually need to work — nothing is sold to third parties.

Information we collect

Account information. If you create an account, we collect your email address and password (handled securely by our authentication provider, Supabase — we never see or store your password in plain text). Your display name defaults to your email unless you change it, and we store your in-app preferences (font, theme, layout settings) so they follow you across devices.

Your study content. Highlights, notes, prayers, and bookmarks you create are stored on our servers when you're signed in, tied to your account. If you're not signed in, this content stays only on your device and is never sent to us.

Usage analytics. We use PostHog to understand how the app is used — which pages and features are visited, and general interaction patterns. This is anonymous until you sign in, at which point it's associated with your account so we can understand usage across sessions. We don't currently offer an analytics opt-out toggle; if you'd like your usage data excluded, contact us using the details below.

AI-assisted features (web and desktop only). Word studies, scripture Q&A, the reference finder, verse image generation, and the sermon/scripture copilot send the relevant text — verse text, your search query, or (for the sermon copilot) audio you record — to our AI providers to generate a response. This includes Google's Gemini models (routed through our AI gateway), OpenAI (as a fallback for image generation only), and Deepgram (for turning spoken audio into text). We only send what's needed to answer your specific request; we don't proactively scan or store your content beyond what a feature needs to run.

Payments. Scriptural doesn't sell anything and takes no payments. There are no paid plans and no payment processor connected to the app, so we never receive or store card details. If you choose to give towards the running costs, you leave the app for an external giving page and everything about that transaction stays with the provider handling it — giving is optional and doesn't change what the app does for you. We still hold records of donations made before this change, which we use only to keep those supporters' existing access working.

Email list. When you create an account we subscribe you to the daily verse and the weekly digest, and store your email address and those preferences. If instead you enter an address into a signup form on the site, we send one confirmation email and add you only if you click the link in it. Mail is sent via our delivery provider, Resend. You can turn either email off at any time in Account settings, and every email also carries a one-click unsubscribe link.

How we use this information

To provide and improve the app's features, keep your study content and preferences in sync across devices, respond to support requests, send the emails you are subscribed to, and understand which features are actually useful so we can prioritize what to build next.

Third parties we work with

Supabase (database, authentication, file storage), Google Gemini and our AI gateway (AI-assisted study features), OpenAI (image generation fallback), Deepgram (speech-to-text for the sermon copilot), API.Bible / American Bible Society (Bible text for KJV, ASV, and WEB, and narrated audio for WEB's New Testament), Resend (transactional email), and PostHog (product analytics). Each only receives the specific data needed to perform its function.

Data storage & security

Your data is stored with Supabase, which encrypts data in transit and at rest. Access to production data is limited to what's needed to operate the service. As with any online service, no method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect your information.

Your choices

You can read any chapter without an account by opening it directly (for example scriptural.online/bible/JHN.3.16). Saving highlights, notes and prayers requires a free account, because those are stored against your account rather than on your device. You can unsubscribe from any email at any time via the link in that email. You can delete your account and all associated data yourself at any time — see Delete Your Account for the exact steps. You can export your own notes and highlights from inside the app — open a chapter's study notes and choose Export, as Markdown or plain text. For any other copy of your data, contact us using the details below.

Children's privacy

Scriptural is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we'll delete it.

Mobile apps (iOS & Android)

The iOS and Android apps include Scriptural's core Bible study features. The sermon copilot, scripture copilot, and live projection tools — which use your device's microphone — are available on the web and desktop apps only. The mobile apps never request microphone or speech-recognition access.

Changes to this policy

If we make material changes to this policy, we'll update the "Last updated" date above. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
